Senate Bill 315

LAS VEGAS – Nevadans who want to help raise awareness of childhood cancer can purchase a special license plate aimed at bringing attention to childhood cancer starting January 1, 2020.

With each purchase, $25 from the initial issue and $20 from renewals will go to fund the Rare Disease Advisory Council within the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to study the prevalence and treatment of rare diseases.

The license plate features a gold ribbon, the international awareness symbol for childhood cancer. Inside the ribbon are the words, “Make Childhood Cancer Extinct.” The plate, designed by Alan Robles of Las Vegas features a roaring Tyrannosaurus in the background and on the bottom the words “Cure Childhood Cancer.”

The plate comes as part of Senate Bill 315 which was signed by Governor Steve Sisolak on May 30, 2019. The bill, sponsored by Senator Joyce Woodhouse, provides for continuing education to physicians on the symptoms of childhood cancer, educates parents on the importance of annual physical examinations for children and calls for the issuance of a Childhood Cancer Awareness license plate.

The bill was created in honor of Carson Arreola, a six-year-old Las Vegas boy, who lost his life to leukemia three days after diagnosis. Carson had a love of dinosaurs and hoped to one day become a paleontologist.

“The license plate was created to honor the children fighting cancer, to celebrate those who have survived cancer, and to remember those children who have died from this horrific disease,” said Aubrey Arreola, mother to Carson.

The specialty plates will cost $62 for standard numbering and $97 for personalized plates in addition to all other registration fees. If swapping plates on an existing registration, no smog check or registration renewal is needed but there is a $6 transfer fee. The annual renewal will cost $30 for standard plates and$50 for personalized versions.

Plates can be ordered starting January 1, 2020. Nevadans interested in purchasing a personalized Childhood Cancer Awareness license plate can visit the DMV’s website. Standard issue plates can be obtained at any DMV field office. To make an office appointment to buy a new license plate and replace their old one visit https://dmvnv.com/dashpass.
